From Shangri-la to Bali Hai
The Hawaiian Islands of Oahu & Kauai
Aloha–
Oahu, known as the Gathering Place, is home to world-famous Waikiki and an extraordinary collection of public and private gardens. Kauai is called the Garden Island for its lush rain forests, emerald valleys, pristine beaches and spectacular Waimea–the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. Join Pacific Horticulture on a tropical garden adventure. We have a special invitation to visit Doris Duke’s Shangri-la on Oahu, a sunset tour of the Allerton Estate on Kauai, and much, much more. Check out our tour page for dates and details, or simply enjoy a glimpse of this island paradise:
- The amazing flowers and bracts of Heliconia rostrata behind a Croton cultivar in a lush Hawaiian garden.
- Heliconia caribaea cultivar underplanted with Cordyline cultivars.
- Zingiber spectabile lives up to its name in this Hawaiian garden.
- The swimming pool in one of the gardens on the grounds of Sangri La, Doris Duke’s Islamic-inspired estate on Oahu, at the foot of Diamond Head.
- A window seat in the living room of May Moir’s home looks out on one of the garden areas surrounding the charming 1920’s home. Tucked away in Nu’uanu Valley, the house has views of outdoor garden rooms wonderfully framed by picture windows and French doors.
- A visit to the tropics is not complete without the geometry of the traveler’s “palm.” Ravenala madagascariensis. This striking plant isn’t a palm at all; it is in the Strelitziaceae family, along with the more familiar bird-of-paradise plant.
