Dawn Hummel is a current member of the Association of NW Landscape Designers (ANLD) and enewsletter manager and GardenComm (GWA). She was the garden columnist for the Multnomah Village Post Newspaper for three years.
Dawn has spoken repeatedly at the Yard, Garden and Patio show, Portland Spring and Fall Home and Garden tradeshows in Portland, OR. Hummel has spoken at Northwest Flower and Garden Show in Seattle, Garden Writers Association National Symposium, Smith & Hawken, Master Gardener mini-college, Master Gardener groups, and various garden clubs, Lockwood’s Garden Center, The Oregon Garden and Perennial Friends Garden Club.
Dawn worked with Chambers Productions to assemble the award-winning project management team for PBS “Smart Gardening” television series. The pilot series was awarded a coveted Garden Writers Association award. Dawn was the tradeshow coordinator and media representative for the New Variety Showcase Garden during the 2003 Yard, Garden and Patio Show sponsored by Sun GroÒ Horticulture. She worked with Association of NW Landscape Designers and Oregon Association of Nurseries Greenhouse Chapter. The display garden won first place in Best of Division category.
She was the 2004 Winter Program Coordinator for the ANLD (Association of NW Landscape Designers).
She assisted Plant a Row for the Hungry display garden for the 2005 Yard, Garden and Patio show. Dawn has been a Washington County Master Gardener since 2001 and was the directory chair for four years. As a member of the Perennial Garden Club, she held the Planning Committee Chairperson, Vice-President and the 2006 – 2007 President title.
Professionally, Dawn worked two years at PoppyBox Gardens Nursery, a high-end retail nursery concept store as their main in-house presentation specialist and as the retail sales lead at their two greater metro Portland, Oregon locations.
She assisted Fred Meyer Raleigh Hills Garden Center with seasonal workforce training and retail sales.
Dawn was the Sales and Marketing Manager for Blooming Nursery, a wholesale perennial grower working only with independent garden centers in the Pacific Northwest. The 2005 Portland Home and Garden Show she provided plant and designed marketing materials for the ‘Knot Your Ordinary Blooming Garden’ which won an educational award.
She worked in the sales and marketing department at Glenn Walter’s Nursery – one of the largest wholesale woody ornamental growers in the state of Oregon with over 1,300 acres in production which shipped nationwide and into Canada.
She provided plant material for Simon Cowell’s – celebrity host from American Idol – second home in Beverly Hills, CA. Hummel was the Plant Sale Coordinator for the spring annual open to the public sale held every May.
Dawn has blogged on www.TheMulch.com and www.solexx.com. She designed marketing materials and press opportunities for ANLD members exhibiting at the 2009 Portland Home & Garden Show. She worked on PR, marketing and websites for Packing Pearls and Solexx Greenhouses. She has written two articles for Proven Winners new on-line magazine which debuted in April 2009.
During spring 2010, Dawn was the tree and shrub buyer for Dennis 7 Dees Nursery, Cedar Hills location.
Hummel was on the Executive Planning Committee for the 60th annual GWA National Symposium held in Portland, Oregon.
Dawn was the social media and publicity coordinator and bus captain for the 2010 Perennial Plant Association’s national symposium held in Portland, Oregon from July 18 – 24, 2010.
From 2010 – 2011, Hummel worked as the New Product Development Marketing Coordinator for Kraemer’s Nursery in Mt. Angel, OR. Kraemer’s (KNI) grows over 500 varieties of trees, shrubs, perennials, vines, fruit and more geared towards box stores and independent garden centers (IGC) in the Pacific NW.
Hummel launched BeeDazzled Media, LLC in 2011. Dawn has worked with horticultural industry leaders including: Maria Zampini/UpShoot, Stephanie Cohen – The Perennial Diva, Jerry Fritz, Carolyn Summers, Sally Cunningham, Bobbie Schwartz, Kate Copsey and Annie Haven and many others in a media, book publishing, social media, web development, event production and marketing capacity.
For three years, Dawn was the social media, print designer and media coordinator for the Annual Association of Landscape Designers Garden Tour. In 2016, she raised over $3,000 in sponsorships which defrayed increasing publicity costs by engaging local community businesses including Al’s Garden Center, Orchards Hardware Supply, and Garden Design Magazine.
In June 2017, she represented the United States as the only media representative to attend the RHS Chatsworth first annual garden show sponsored by Mercedes and Wedgewood Pottery. She brought back a notebook of ideas for local garden shows and events to copy. Hummel was sponsored by Garden Design Magazine and #GardenChat online.
In August 2017, she was featured in Digger Magazine ‘Rise from the Ashes’ article on impacts to tree growers by the Emerald Ash Borer. In March 2018, she will be featured with ‘Houseplants are Hot Again’ and in April on ‘Intensive Plantings with Grasses and Perennials in the Landscape.”
