Gardens in Summer-Dry Climates – My Observations

Gardens in Summer-Dry Climates – My Observations

Wednesday, July 29, 2026

7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. PST

Saxon Holt is a Pacific Horticulture Board member and Director of The Summer-Dry Project, an ongoing initiative to encourage climate adapted plants for gardens in summer-dry climates – which is virtually all of the Pacific Horticulture zones. Saxon has been a professional garden photographer and contributor to Pacific Horticulture for more than 40 years and during those years of studying gardens and learning from some of the best garden designers and plant experts in the West Coast he has observed an evolution in garden styles.  Water conservation was hardly a concern in most landscape design, and very few landscape professionals considered local ecosystems in design. Some of the most interesting uses of California native plants were being done in England and native plant societies themselves were more interested in conservation of rare plants than anything at all to do with gardening.

Much has changed and indeed is still changing more rapidly than many realize. It is an exciting time to be gardening and there’s much we can learn from each other about resiliency and localized success stories. With this new webinar series Pacific Horticulture hopes to engage our own members in this conversation as we learn about trends in gardening and share what we are learning from industry leaders.

Join Saxon and other board members on Wednesday, July 29 for this Members Only presentation and conversation as we kick off the series with “Gardens in Summer-Dry Climates – My Observations”
